My first detox was the Lemon Juice and Cayenne Pepper. Since I had never done a detox before, this was particularly difficult depriving my body of the sweets and treats that I love. What they say is true, though: it gets easier overtime--easier as the detox progresses through the week, and easier the next time you ever decide to detox again.
The way I measured my Cayenne Lemon Juice Detox daily concoction consisted of a 50 fl. oz. bottle filled with:
6 Squeezed Lemons
12 tbsp. Grade B Maple Syrup
1/4 Cayenne Pepper
and filling the 50 fl. oz. bottle the rest of the way with filtered water
This was my food for 7 days. In the morning I drank 30 fl. oz. of filtered water mixed with 2 tsp. of natural sea salt. This acts as a quick laxative (emphasis on quick) to rid your body of toxins burned from your fat reserves as you sleep through the night. Throughout the day and into the evening I drank lots of filtered water and herbal teas. I stayed off all medications, including OTC pain relievers, and my daily women's multivitamin. The only medication I continued to take was my birth control. Also, no alcohol, coffee, or caffeine. After the detox, I eased into introducing solids back into my body.
Day 1 after detox consisted of filtered water, herbal teas and vegetable stock. Day 2 consisted of filtered water, herbal teas, and cooked vegetables. I steamed spaghetti squash with homemade tomato sauce (no oils/fats, or grains). Day 3 was soup. I made a red bean and sweet potato stew. Day 4 was all foods, where grains were the last things to be introduced back into the diet.
This week I am mainly doing the Mean Green juice fast. I wanted to avoid totally eliminating fiber from my diet, nor to eliminate all solid foods from the fast this time. I am mainly doing the detox to eliminate bad habits, like my addiction to sugar and grains, and to overload my body with disease fighting vitamins and minerals. In the morning, I will have solid fruits and vegetables, or make a kale and fruit smoothie. Throughout the day, I drink the Mean Green juice, and once home, I may have solid fruits and veggies, Mean Green, and/or a smoothie. I may also allow myself certain organic foods in small portions such as quinoa or tofu from Whole Foods two times a week after a long work day, but have not been doing any cooking in the house.
Mean Green Juice1 tsp. Ginger1/2 Lemon, peeled 5-6 Kale (stems and leaves) 1 Whole Cucumber (w/kin) 4 Stalks of Celery 2 Granny Smith Apples 1 C. Water |
The order that you juice your ingredients doesn't matter based on taste, but sometimes fruits/vegetables are better at pushing other fruits/vegetables down the shoot, or cleaning out the screen. I place my fruits/vegetables in the order as listed.
What I have found with this fast is that as long as I am eating solid fruits and vegetables, I may not be helping my body solely focus on cleaning out toxins stored in my fat reserves. My body may be spending much more energy focusing on digestion. I am about to do a little traveling, so perhaps when I arrive back in Miami I will focus more on consuming just the juice. Until then, happy juicing!
